For an ordinary VPS, treat both DigitalOcean and Vultr as self-managed infrastructure choices. Choose the exact server family, region and surrounding services your application needs, then compare the complete bill. Neither brand is a substitute for someone who can operate the server.

First decide who will run the server
DigitalOcean explicitly describes Droplets as unmanaged. Vultr’s migration guidance likewise places instance administration with the customer, while distinguishing its managed services. A one-click application image can simplify installation without taking over patching, recovery or ongoing security.
If you want to upload a site and ask support to handle every operating-system incident, an ordinary VPS is probably the wrong starting point. Budget for a server administrator, a clearly scoped management service, or a different type of hosting. If your team already operates Linux systems, control may be an advantage.
Compare equivalent deployments
A useful comparison names the whole setup. ‘Two CPUs’ does not tell you whether CPU time is shared or dedicated, and the same memory size does not establish equal sustained performance. Record the selected family rather than comparing the brands’ cheapest advertisements.

Compute is only one part of the bill
DigitalOcean lists a Basic regular-CPU Droplet with 1 GiB memory, 1 vCPU, 25 GiB SSD and 1,000 GiB transfer at $6 per month. This is a concrete reference point, not a recommendation that 1 GiB is enough for your application. Obtain an equivalent current Vultr quote before comparing costs.
DigitalOcean’s percentage-based backups are 20% of the Droplet cost for weekly backups and 30% for daily backups; it also offers a usage-based model. Vultr documents automatic backups at 20% of the instance price. Do not assume these percentages buy the same schedule, retention or recovery outcome.
Vultr meters outbound transfer and documents a $0.01-per-GB overage rate. Its compute billing policy says powered-off instances still incur charges until destroyed, with a one-hour minimum and a 672-hour monthly cap for non-GPU servers. Turned off is not the same as deleted.
Build a quote with compute, backups, extra disks, load balancing, network use and tax. Then add operating time separately. Before deleting a test server, inspect associated storage and backups so you do not leave paid resources behind or destroy a restore point you still need.
Location is a shortlist filter, not a speed guarantee
Prefer a region you can justify from your audience and application dependencies. A server close to visitors can still feel slow if every request waits on a database on another continent. A global CDN does not remove every dynamic request to the origin.
Check whether your chosen region has the exact instance family, database service and other dependencies you intend to use. A provider having a location somewhere is not evidence that all its products are available there. For a regulated workload, confirm contractual requirements separately; a city in a dropdown does not settle compliance.
Our practical suggestion: narrow to two feasible deployments and run the same repeatable test in each. Measure response time under realistic concurrency, database latency and errors, not just a single speed-test score. Keep region, software and workload constant where possible.
Test the move before changing DNS
Treat migration as a reversible release. Create the destination, restore a recent copy and test it on a temporary hostname. Check login, file uploads, scheduled jobs, outbound email, webhooks and database writes. A page loading successfully does not prove the full application works.
Plan the final data sync and any write freeze explicitly. Lowering a DNS record’s TTL shortly before switching does not instantly remove already cached records. Keep the old environment available for a defined rollback window and prevent both copies from processing the same jobs.
Write the rollback trigger before launch: for example, persistent checkout failures or missing database writes. Assign a person who can execute it and decide how newly created data will be reconciled. These operational details can outweigh a small monthly saving.
- Keep a separate, verified backup before starting.
- Inventory persistent files, database data, secrets and scheduled work.
- Test the destination without sending real customer messages or duplicate charges.
- Monitor the application after cutover, not only server uptime.
- Retire old resources only after the rollback window and a billing review.

Shortlist DigitalOcean when a specific Droplet and the services available alongside it fit your application and your team’s workflow. Shortlist Vultr when its available region and instance family fit better. In either case, verify the complete quote before checkout.

Can either host WordPress?
A suitably configured VPS can run WordPress, but software installation is not ongoing management. You still need a supported software stack, patching, backups and a restore process.
Can I compare the same RAM size and choose the cheaper one?
RAM is only one constraint. CPU sharing, storage behavior, region, backup policy and operational requirements can make two equal-memory plans very different purchases.
